Few cars garner as much love and appreciation as fast cars. The faster, the better. But which cars are the fastest? Which cars completely rule the road when comes to speed? Consider the top 10 fastest cars that have been in production. We will count down the top 10 fastest cars, from 10 to 1.
10a. Pagani Huayra
This speedy demon clocks in with a top speed of 230 MPH (370 KMH). It comes from a long line of super cars, the most recent of which in the family line was the Pagani Zonda. It has the engine of Mercdes V-12 6.0 liter engine that can push out over 730 horse power. At an estimated cost of $1,300,000 this vehicles certain bears the title of a super car. But what top it?
10b. Ferrari LaFerrari
Ferrari’s most recent installment in the super car realm ties with the older Huayra in top speed, again at 230 MPH (370 KMH). It’s engine boasts an extra .3 liters of displacement, bringing this V-12 beast up to 6.3 liters in all. That extra .3 liters has quite the impact though, with the LaFerrari having over 950 horsepower in all. All of that comes from only 664 lb-ft or torque. It is one of the few super cars in the world to also be a hybrid (take that, Prius!). That’s right, some of this mighty stallion’s power comes from not-so-humble electric motor.
9. Zenvo ST1
Hailing from regions unknown (well, Denmark) is this mean looking super car. With lines that look like they can slice the air, it helps to have a 7.0 liter V-8 engine that unrelentingly churns out 1104 horse power. All of this equates to a top speed of 233 MPH (375 KMH). Clearly, while they may be new to the super car game, the Danes are not to be trifled with.
8. Mclaren F1
An oldie, but still a “goldie,” the Mclaren F1 has been on the top 10 fastest cars list for well over 15 year. In fact, it made its first video game appearance in the 1997 hit classic Need For Speed II. In the game, the car was accurately represented as topping out at 240 MPH (386 KMH). The real life version of the car has a massive V-12 engine block that tirelessly pumps over 627 horse power to the pavement.
7. Koenigsegg CCX
Beating a Mclaren F1′s top speed is no small feet, but doing it at close to half the cost is all the more impressive. And yet, that’s what the Swedish made Koenigsegg CCX manages to do. This strikingly subtle super car hides below it’s fenders a 4.8 liter V-8 engine that makes this not only the cheapest car on our list, but also the most fuel efficient. And this beast has something in common with its cousin, the famous Swedish built furniture. When BBC’s Top Gear test drove this little demon, they were blown away by the amount of changes that could be made to vehicles. These changes are achieved by letting the car come in many pieces that can be altered and adjusted. This also makes this one of the most flexible cars on our list.
6. Saleen S7 Twin Turbo
Like a fine wine, it seems like a little age on some of our super cars makes them all the better. One of the oldest on our list, the Sallen S7 still has plenty of sharp teeth. This sleek beauty has it’s V-8 engine pumped up with twin turbo chargers, that let is leap to 248 MPH (399 KMH). Nearly eight years old, this car proves that being long in the tooth does not mean the teeth are dulled.
5. Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport
Is a convertible on our list? Why, yes it is. And a fast one at that. With a quad (that’s 4, if your counting) Turbo 7.9-liter 16 cylinder engine propel this scientific dream faster than most other cars can imagine. When nearing it’s top speed, this car actually transforms it’s shape to alter drag and down force, and give it that extra little zest. She tops out at 254 MPH (408 KMH).
4. SSC Ultimate Aero TT
Not one to be left out of any competition, Shelby has its footprints here as well. Our next car was produced by Shelby Super Cars, and the Aero TT is truly super. It is one of the fastest American built cars ever, and tops out at 257 MPF (413 KMH). It is pushed to the limit by it 6.3 liter twin-turbo V-8 engine, which pours out 1287 horse power like it’s lemonade.
3. Koenigsegg Agera R
Truly, the sleakest machine in our list, Sweden is not one to be left out. They’re not the only one with two cars on our list, but they make it look easy with this 260 MPH (418 KMH) ball of fury. With a 5.0 liter twin turbo V8, they maintain their resolution to fuel efficiency. They manage to wring 1115 horse power out of each drop of fuel they use.
2. Hennessey Venom GT
This little beast has made huge ripples in the “fastest car” arena, with it’s designer and builder recently contesting the world record for the fastest car, based on the definition of the word production. But speaking of production, no one can argue with the 1244 horse power that this car produces, that propels it to speeds in excess of 265 MPH (427 KMH).
1. Bugatti Veyron Super Sport
A modified, and refined version, of it’s cousin, Bugatti has done it again. Their newest engineering marvel manages to pound the pavement with 1200 horse power that push it to 268 MPH (430 KMH).
No doubt, this list leaves you marveling at the design and engineering that is put into modern super cars. The top 10 fastest cars will always be a closely watched, highly contested list that young boys and old men will drool over for years to come.
